Equestrian tourism

Equestrian tourism is a type of sustainable, recreational tourism, which represents strategic goal of the overall development of tourism in the Hrvatsko Zagorje region. The reasons for that are simple infrastructure that uses the existing natural and cultural resources, a significant contribution to both preservation and restoration of cultural assets and preservation of nature al and landscape quality of the area. The existence of protected natural areas, ecological network and cultural assets are pointed out. In addition, it enables the development of rural economy in terms of reviving the traditional agriculture, increasing the production of local products and development of other, sustainable forms of recreation.
As such, the equestrian tourism is – in terms of tourism – more and more interesting form of recreation that offers a full escape from stress, hustle and bustle. Moreover, it provides a connection to nature and animals and provokes relaxing and healing. The options of horseback riding area in the Hrvatsko Zagorje region are inexhaustible, and by riding into any direction, the experience of beautiful landscape comprising finely ruffled hills with a mosaic of forests, vineyards, hamlets and fields, here and there separated by river valleys, is inexpressible. Connecting of tourism with horses in the Hrvatsko Zagorje region represents its tourist specialty, that preserves the rural history of Zagorje and cultural, countryside heritage as a particular character of this region. Moreover, horseback riding is an adventure recreation that differs from all the other forms of sustainable tourism in the fact that it includes the horse – an animal as the basis for any activity. Horseback riding, in the role of recreation and tourism, improves health, increases knowledge of the natural and cultural resources, develops cognitive and psychological functions and effects creation of environmental awareness. Such a psychophysical activity shapes the character and personality of the person and stimulates person’s inner development.
By arranging the equestrian trails in the length of approximately 170 km, one has been granted access to every corner throughout the Zagorje region and their natural and cultural attractions in a special way - in interaction with the horse – further enriched by connections with equestrian trails in Slovenia. This creates the basis for development of equestrian tourism and other related aspects of sustainable tourism in the Croatian Zagorje.
